IN Exchange – Documentary

4 months inside the Off West-End: IN Exchange – our first feature-length documentary.

IN Exchange gives an insight into the company’s preparation of 2018’s double Offie-nominated bilingual production of Moliere’s Misanthrope at Camden People’s Theatre.

Since 2007, Exchange Theatre has proudly held an annual festival, in English and French. Over the course of multiple lockdowns however, the company had to take on the challenge of reinventing itself. For our 15th anniversary IN Exchange is our first venture into filmmaking as we increasingly shift our focus to the digital and online aspects of our work.

Masterfully crafted by film-makers Marie Loury and Léo-Paul Payen, the documentary explores the ups, downs, ins and outs of the four-month long creative process, from the audition stage to the pre-opening night stress. Be immersed in an innovative, multicultural and inherently political process that aims to share a new creative vision in tune with the 21st century. The film also delves into the day-to-day lives and thoughts of cast and crew in the sometimes trying context of producing lower-scale theatre in London. Through the hardships however, emerges a sense of community and togetherness only art can create under.

In short, IN Exchange will make you discover what makes Exchange Theatre a multicultural, multilingual, open-minded, dynamic but most of all very human theatre company.

For this special occasion, we decided to share an insight into our process; to refocus on our human values through a unique documentary. With our documentary, you will discover what makes Exchange Theatre a multicultural, multilingual, open-minded, dynamic and young theatre company. You will live at the heart of Exchange Theatre and be completely immersed in our life. In a true cinematic experience directed by film-makers Marie Loury and Léo-Paul Payen you will understand how the company worked through Molière’s play Misanthrope from production to performance. Rooted in our diversity, you will find out how we manage to do theatre for the present and how at the end our productions offer you true sensorial experience.
